The Amish are an American protestant community. It began in Switzerland several centuries ago. They all have in commun the same way of living., dressng and above all, the same values.
Their life is ruled by a spiritual activity and a communauty welfare. Men usually wear dark suits, pants are fastened with buttons instead of zippers and are maintained by suspenders but no belts with buccles ,dark shoes and socks, and straw or black broad brimmed hat and women, long dresses with long sleeves, black or white aprons and caps to cover their hair. At sixteen , the teenagers go for the "rumspringa". They can experience the outside life, drink, smoke...About 90 per cent come back in the community after that and make the commitment of baptism. Those who decide to leave will never be able to come back.
This 200.000 Amish community speak three languages : English, German
and Pennsylvania Dutch , a sort of dialect.
They claim a simple way of life and are very distant with new technologies.
One of their main characteristic, which became a symbol for foreigners is their horse drawn buggy which is looking miles away from our civilization !
