Une jeune fille qui économisait pour l'université commence à surveiller la maison d'un voisin en échange de rémunération. Le voisin, un docteur, lui demande d’arriver à 19 h.
Une heure après être arrivée à la maison, elle reçoit un appel téléphonique. L'homme au bout du fil lui dit que si elle ne sort pas de la maison, il la tuera. Elle raccroche et regarde sur l'afficheur, mais la personne qui téléphone utilise une ligne privée.
30 minutes plus tard, un autre appel :
« Si tu ne sors pas bientôt de la maison je te tuerai », déclare l’homme à la voix rauque au bout du fil.
La jeune fille raccroche et appelle la téléphoniste. Cette dernière suggère de garder l'homme en ligne environ une minute pour qu’elle puisse retracer l’appel.
L'homme rappelle après 30 minutes et la gardienne parvient à le garder en ligne. Il lui répète de sortir de la maison maintenant ou il la tuera. La téléphoniste rappelle aussitôt pour sommer l’étudiante de sortir de la maison le plus rapidement possible.
L'appel provient de la deuxième ligne de la maison, celle du deuxième étage. L’assassin se trouve dans la maison...
