Written at the beginning of the eighth century by the Anglo-Saxon monk Bede the Venerable, this History is the first history of England. The success of this masterpiece was immediate throughout Europe, its manuscript was copied more than 150 times and, since the fifteenth century, it has known more than twenty editions. Its importance was such that it was translated into Old English from the ninth century, thus contributing to the unification of the various angles and Saxon kingdoms. All English historians were inspired by it, like Geoffroy de Monmouth for his History of the Kings of Brittany (published in the Book Wheel). Closer to home, Yourcenar and Borgès, in particular, devoted several pages. moi j'ai fais mes recherches
