Today, I’m going to talk you about the concept “Spaces and Exchanges”. First of all,Let me try to give you a meaning for this notion. This notion deals with the different flows of exchanges between two geographical or numerical places. Theses exchanges could be for example demographic, economic or cultural…
To introduce this notion, I chose to present you three documents about Immigration in UK. This topic refers to our notion because << Immigration has always led to lots of exchanges in terms of economy and culture >>, moreover, there is a demographic exchange between the country left by immigrants and the country where they immigrate.
First, I chose to study an article entitled "A Multicultural Society", then a second article entitled "Booming Indian Business" published in 2004 and finally an other article published in 2014 entitled "UK Students to Soon Get Flavour of Indian Culture. "////////////
During my presentation, I will try to present immigration in UK and then, I will try to promote the commonwealth by showing what are its advantages for immigration.
Finally, I will conclude by explaining what are the effects of immigration on our society through the case of United Kingdom.
But first, we are going to reflect about the importance of immigration in United Kingdom. In A Multicultural Society, we learn that UK has always welcoming immigrants during since the XIXth century. Today, 6,5% of the British population are from ethic minorities and we note that the first country immigrating to the UK is India with just under 1 million people. They are so numerous that Indian Culture has become very present in UK. Indeed, according to Booming Indian Business, the Indian culture is included in the London culture as far as music, films and theatre are concerned. For example, Selfridges, a big Londoner distribution firm chose to make Bollywood as major theme in their biggest store in London. Moreover, Bombay Dream, a very famous theatre productions society was very appreciated for its production in the British capital. Furthermore, Indian Immigration is very important for the UK economy too. Indeed, it created employment and generated a turnover of over £8 billions thanks to Indian Business, given that in 2004, 18 of the companies listed on the London Stock Exchanges were Indian. Thus, culturally and economically, we see that immigration has a huge impact on UK.
But, how did Indians make to become integrated so well? India today belongs to the Commonwealth, an intergovernmental organisation directed by the Queen Elisabeth II, which includes former British colonies. Moreover, in India, English is still the national language and English culture is still very present, so they have no problem to adapt themselves to the English way of life. We can understand that UK keeps great relations with its former colonies. For example, in UK students to soon get flavour of Indian Culture, we learn that as Erasmus in Europe, UK sends some British students to another country, here India, for they could try Indian Culture. So, we can see an exchange of culture between UK and India thanks to the Commonwealth, which allows India to be linked to UK and allows so an easier immigration for Indian people.
So, during my presentation, we understood that immigration is very important for our society. Indeed, it allows a cultural sharing and a faster economic development. Thanks to the Commonwealth, UK has kept good diplomatic relations with its former colonies and, today, we can say that immigration is a major actor of the UK culture and economy.
