Today my presentation is going to deal with the idea of progress. First, I would like to define this notion: the idea of progress basically consist in believing that the world can become better in field of technology, science, education, liberty and quality of life. Progress is globally seen positively that the unwanted effect it sometimes caused excesses. So we may wonder to what extent new technologies impacts our everyday lives. To answer this question, we are going to see in a first phase a social experience about cell-phones and in a second phase we look the result of power outage.
The first document, “Student unplug” is a reportage about an experience who titled “to unplug for 24 hours”. The participants had to go without smartphones, computers any medias. During the experience, the participants developed physical and psychological reactions such as anxiety, depression and physical pain. Most students quit this experience and for some students, this experience is a diet. Less than a quarter of the participants considered that this was a profitable test. The experience put forward how much hooked on technology young people are. This is a lesson for the students to learn about their use of technology.
The second document, “Massive power outage across Southern California” is a T.V. news about a power outage who effected southern California, Arizona and New Mexico. One point four million people suffer this breakdown since the days before. This power outage caused traffic disruption because the traffic lights were not working. More, people were immobilizing in the lift, in the train. Otherwise, the economic life was frozen an account of the absence from computer software tool and other professional materials. On the top of that, the document entitled “ Personal experiences of blackouts” is an online post relating people’s personal experiences. This document, use to see two different perception of blackout. The first perception is when there is a power outage, people communicated, made acquaintance and showed solidarity. Whereas for others, it is mayhem because the power cut caused some panic, especially for children. Certain people relate a truamatizing event. Finally,the power-outage shows that new technologies are essential in our daily life and that today, it is difficult to live without. Moreover, when there are a power outage, people behave differently.
To conclude, progress is very important to live in better conditions but the 2 parts showing that we became dependent and that we can’t live without. If there is a problem with modern technology that impact our daily life. Modern technologies are vital in our life. We can also relate these documents to the notion forms of power because these improvement area kind of power.
