This document is a drawing or painting of migrants coming from the "Old Continent" ; probably from different countries as their costumes show , specially the man seen from the back on the right side wearing a skirt and boots; he might come from an eastern country as Russia , maybe....
They are all on the upper deck of a steam boat (bateau à vapeur) I guess..... Each of them, women and men, babies and old persons have crossed the Ocean looking for a new life, a better life. They are finally seeing the Statue of Liberty, symbol of freedom.
All of them are looking towards it; some with eyes full of hope as the young couple on the right side, some with rather scared or suspicious eyes not knowing what is going to happen now. They left their country for a better world, here they are, but what's going to happen in the future?
It's a new story, a new life about to begin, now. (about to begin = sur le point de commencer).
