Horatio Nelson was born in Burnham Thorpe in Norfolk County, England [1]. Son of a good family, he is the sixth of eleven children of Reverend Edmund Nelson and Catherine Suckling [1], some of whom died in infancy. His mother, whom he lost at the age of nine, was the grand-niece of Lord Robert Walpole, Earl of Orford, considered de facto the first Prime Minister of the United Kingdom's Parliament. Catherine lived in the village of Barsham in Suffolk County and married Edmund on May 11, 1749. The name of Horatio comes from his godfather, Horace Walpole [a 1].
Nelson studied at Paston Grammar School in North Walsham, where he befriended fellow students, such as Nelson's correspondent Levett Hanson until his death. Nelson also studied at Norwich School and learned navigation at Barton Broad before joining the Royal Navy. [3] Indeed, his maternal uncle, Navy Officer Maurice Suckling had decided to look after the future of Horatio to help Edmund on the death of Catherine.
