In part, it is an almost obsessive regionalism, resulting from the creation in the late 1970s of 17 autonomous Comunidades – autonomous regions – with their own governments, budgets and ministries of culture, and even police forces. You might think that you are on vacation in Spain – your hosts may be categorical about the fact that you are visiting Catalonia, and they will tell you a wide range of linguistic, cultural and artistic differences, not to mention social and political attitudes. Indeed, the old days of a united nation, governed by a firm hand from Madrid, seem to have gone on forever, as the separate kingdoms that made up the original Spanish state are reaffirmed in a essentially federal structure.
