In my opinion, except the discovery of America by Cristopher Colombus in 1492, one of the major turning points in the history of the United States is "The Civil War" . The states were divided in two parts . The North where slavery was forbidden and the South where it was allowed. They were so dependant on cotton industry, they were sure that Europe was dependant on "King Cotton" and were sure that they would intervene. Those seven states formed the Confederates States of America and wanted their independancy . The North East, called the "Union of North" never declare secession but the "South" has never been recognized by any countries. Slavery was the origin for this war. Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the Rebublicans in 1860.
War began in 1861 till 1865, and slavery was abolished , officially in 1865..
Nowadays, unfortunately, it still subsists more racism in the South. The members of the Ku Klux Klan, for example are still present and acting, persecuting black people in the southern states.
However, on November, the 6th 2012 was elected the first black president of the United States , Barack Obama, and I think it's a great advance in United States's story
