The British captured this island in the 17th century. Barbados became an independent country in 1962. It is a member of the Commonwealth and Queen Elizabeth is the official Head of State.
They imported a lot of slaves from Africa and prisoners from Ireland to work in different plantations: as sugar, Tobacco and cotton plantations.
