Slavery abolished in America on may, 9th 1865.

what did African Americans have to do differently ?

The main reason they are treated differently is because they were brought here as slaves, Most of the African Americans in America today are descendents of slaves brought here from Africa.

when did the civil war start ? who won ?

The civil war began in April, 1861 with the Confederates.
The United States of America - the Union - in the North which won.
