I'm going to talk about the notion places and forms of power. First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion. Power is the ability to control others and to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance, or opposition. The power allows the institution of a political, social and personal order, it helps to create social cohesion but can also lead to tensions, conflicts and forces of opposition. To illustrate this notion, I have chosen to focus on South African and the USA places and forms of power.
How did some people fight against discrimination, laws and opression?
First I will talk about the segregation in USA and the apartheid in South Africa.
Since the appearance of the segregation in the USA, many events upset the life of the black Americans.Today, after years of fight, they managed to acquire all their civil rights. The installation of laws like the Jim Craw Rag and the Civil Right Act was necessary for the restoring of the integration of black people in the American society. Movements like the Black Panther and the Black Power fight against discrimination.
So, here is the text named « Arrest of Rosa Park » on wikipedia and also the adaptation in comic strip of this arrest. The article informs that Rosa Parks was one of the first people to actively challenged the American segregation laws. She symbolized the civil rights movement. Everyone hailed her courage and strength by her refusal to give her seat to a white man in an Alabama bus, in December 1955. The law required blacks passengers give their seat to the white passengers. She was convicted of breaking the law and fined 10$. Her action sparked the most famous bus boycott that lasted 381 days. Simultaneous, legal challenges led to a Supreme Court decision that forced Montgomery to desegregate its bus system and quashed other discriminatory laws throughout the south of the USA. In 1999, the US Senate described Mrs Parks as "a living icon for freedom in America".
Martin Luther king, with his famous speech : « I have a dream » changed the vision of many americans .These article help us understanding that before the civil Rights movement, when white were thought to be better than any "race", they decided it was the time to change it. Moreover, in South Africa, black people knew this change too.
In South Africa, black people were considered as second-class citizens. Apartheid in practice means « Separate and unequal » .People who fight against discrimination have been imprisoned, detained, forced into exile etc..Because of apartheid, for example , only white people could vote, everyone in the government is white, they had the ability to control all the other races. Now, South Africa is a place under different forms of power. We can see an emergence of a black middle-class in the video "The new face of Soweto"; blacks people can have things. When Mandela walked out of jail, and became the first democratically elected president in nineteen ninety-four (1994), he aimed at building a new South Africa that would be democratic, non-racist and non-sexist. As well as writing a new constitution which proclaims the recognition of black people’s rights,Ф and set Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Conclusion:
Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and many others stood for equality between black and white people.
They defended the civil rights and the racial integration. They proved that everyone can break unfair laws. In my view, to fight against segregation's laws, they had a lot of courage. People from different cultures can nowadays live together in harmony thanks to a long and painful fight for equality led by honorable persons. They help people to move forward .We also can relate these articles to the notion of myths and heroes and idea of progress. Indeed, Rosa parks and ML King are regarded as heroes by many people ;because of their actions, they contribuate to change rights for black people in USA.
