Today, Joseph, Ezell, David and I sat down to the lunch counters at Woolworth's department store. It was the most peaceful way we knew how to protest. All we did was sit. Oh, you should have heard the names they called us! They wanted us to move. They shoved us and shouted at us, but we remained calm. We stayed polite. Why can't people see we just want to be able to sit at an open table, regardless of what section it is in, and eat our lunch? Why does the color of my skin matter when I am thirsty and need a drink? I was scared today, but I am no longer afraid. I am in the right. I am so proud of my friends. I will never forget their courage. I hope we made a difference.
