Hello everyone, my name is x, and I’ll tell you how my first day at school went. I remember it like it was yesterday. That’s means a lot, ‘cause that was a really rough day for me. Back to school was a Friday. I was 9 years old and I was going to make my fifth grade primary school of Honoré de Balzac.
I was escorted by my father. In fact, I was looking forward to discovering this new school, getting to know these children who will be my classmates, and finally finding out about the teacher who will teach me this year. But since I was pretty shy when I was nine, I was afraid that no one would play with me because I was a new student and they would distrust me. But I thought to myself: I shouldn’t be shy and rather make a good impression with those who will share the same school as me. I had breathed profoundly and I knocked on the door and opened it. All heads turned in my direction. I had lowered my head and my eyes turned towards my shoes as I was far too shy to look straight into their eyes and present myself. I was walking slowly to the classroom, and I stood in front of the professor. She smiled at me, but I was too afraid to look at her. All the pupils were staring at me. But it only made things worse since the teacher started asking me some questions like: what’s your name? What is your age? What school are you from? ... But I couldn’t say a word. As if my mouth was scotched. I took a second time a deep breath and answered her questions with difficulties. when I was done with the teacher, she showed me my desk and I went to settle down. There was a young boy sitting next to me. I dared not to speak to him, so all I did listen to the teacher’s instructions, to solve mathematical exercises.
Twenty minutes later the bell rang, all the children rushed out of the classroom to enjoy the thirty minutes of rest. When I got where the student play, I was trying to fit in by trying to join the different groups of students, to get to know each other, and could become my friends... But every time, they wouldn’t let me play with them, and they would send me away. I felt so alone. I asked myself several questions: Why didn’t they want me to stay with them? Am I scaring them? when we went back to the classroom, we started a new activity and we had to get into a group of two or three. All the students had gathered together and I was left alone on my chair waiting for someone to add me in their group. I had indeed remained alone and the groups were almost complete but the teacher made an exception and added me to a group of three. I smiled at them and they looked at me rather strangely, as if my presence disturbed them. But I acted like everything was fine and we started working. The students with I work didn’t pay any attention to me and talked, laughed and worked with each other. I was trying to work but every time they stopped me. I was afraid to tell them to let me work. I was afraid of how they would react and did nothing and waited until the end of the activity to return to my place.
The boy sitting next to me patted my shoulder. I could not move or face him. He repeated his gesture a second time and looked at him fearlessly enough. He was smiling at me and asked me to lend him my glue. I was quite surprised when he was smiling at me. He thanked me and presented himself, his name was x. I finally thought to myself that everyone in this class wasn’t that bad and there were some pretty nice, smiling people.
