Terrance Stanley “Terry” Fox terrier, born July 28th, 1958 in Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada), was a Canadian athlete and a militant for the research dedicated to the treatment of cancer. He became famous thanks to his “Marathon of the hope”. At 22 years, the young man, equipped with an artificial leg, undertakes to cross Canada of one ocean to the other while dreaming to pile up 1$ per Canadian citizen for research against cancer.Raised with Coquitlam Port, as a Colombia-British, Terry Fox is a very active and sporting teenager. Whereas it is only 18 years old, the doctors diagnose an osteogenic sarcoma (cancer of the bones) and cut down its right leg in 1977 six inches (approximately 15 cm) above knee. During his stay at the hospital, Terry is very affected by the terrible suffering of the other patients who are also reached cancer; several of them are only children. It is at this time that Terry decides to run of an end to the other of Canada in order to collect funds for research on cancer.It would call this exploit the Marathon of the Hope. Eighteen months and 5,000 kilometers (3 107 miles) of training later, Terry begins his Marathon of the Hope in Newfoundland, in the town of Midsummer's Day, April 12th, 1980. There are few spectators. At the beginning, one carries very little of attention to this young man who runs with only one leg, but little by little, enthusiasm grows and the money starts to accumulate more and more quickly. Terry crosses the Atlantic Provinces of Canada, Quebec and Ontario at a rate of 42 kilometers per day.It would be an exploit which the Canadians would never forget. But September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometers (3 339 miles) of race, Terry must cease running right before Thunder Bay, to Ontario, because cancer reappeared in its lungs. The whole nation under the shock and is afflicted. Terry dies June 28th, 1981 at the 22 years age. Because of his history, Terry Fox is from now on a true hero and a touching example of innocence, honesty and perseverance for all the Canadians. Dreamed of Terry Fox to pile up 1$ per Canadian (that is to say approximately 30 million dollars) from now on is largely exceeded since its initiative to date made it possible to join together more than 500 million dollars on its behalf
