bonjour
One of the most famous Inuit legends, is the legend of the sea goddess Sedna.
This legend is told throughout the Artic but may vary from an area to another.
However, it always ends with a young woman becoming the mother of all the sea creatures.
Sedna was a very beautiful young girl, but very vain. She spent her days brushing her nice brown hair. She was desired/coveted (trouvé dans mon dico) by many men who wished to marry her.
As she was very hard to please, she was always rejected all these advances.
One day (Some day), her father said that the next man who would introduce himself to ask his daughter's hand in marriage would get it. Sedna had no more choice.
The next day, a richly dressed hunter appeared and got married with Sedna.
So she left with this man who now was her husband on an island where he was living.
Shortly after, it turned out that this man was a chaman living most of the time
with the appearance of a bird.
Sedna was very unhappy and spent her days crying. Her father heard her
and decided to go and get her.
One day when the chaman was gone, he took his kayak to take her back.
When the chaman was back, he saw his wife has gone and went into a terrible anger and set off a terrible storm on the ocean
Sedna and her father were still aboard their Kayak and were caught in the storm. Understanding at once what was going on, Sedna's father threw her daughter overboard to escape from the chaman.
She tried to hold on tu the kayak unsuccessfully, her father was hitting his daughter's fingers with its paddle. Her fingers finally broke and fell into water. They became the ocean's fishes. Sedna let herself sink into this icy water and she turned into a beautiful sea goddess
