Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in a Bantu family in South Africa. His father was one of the leaders of the Xhosa ethnic group. After graduating in law in 1942 from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, he joined the ANC (African National Congress), which was then a political party.
