Today I'm going to talk about the idea of progress. To begin with, I woud like to give a definition. Progress is the idea that the world and the society can evolve positively, that could be in science, in economy, in social, in technology... Moreover, progress is generaly associated to robotics, because today, robots are everywhere, with our smartphones, home appliances or videogames.
So, we are going to ask if man are machine-man or if robots are man-machine?
To know it, I am first going to talk about the man-machine, then I will continue with the machine-man and, to finish with, where are we heading ?
The first document is a film still (?) in black and white. On this picture, we can observe a tall robot dancing with a charming women who is wearing a white dress. The two characters seem happy, even the robot even if (même si) he had only the appearance of a machine : it's a man-machine.
The second documents relates to intelligent machines. It's an extract from the newspaper "The Huffington Post" published in 2011. It deals with an intelligent machine named Watson. Watson is a computer developed by IBM, that took part in a Jeopardy TV game shown in january 2011. It is a general culture competitive test on an American TV. The computer won against two candidats who were the game champions. This Watson showed an outstanding capacity to understand and answer questions raised to it.
Then we are going to talk about Machine Man, or Cyborg. A cyborg is a creature which is a half man, half machine. In fact, the next document is named "I, Cyborg". This article deals with a British cybernetics professor who works at the university of Reading. He volunteered to have surgery on his body although he was healty. He did that for the sake of science. He was successful and managed to move a wheel chair (only) with his thoughts. He had an electronic chip implanted on his arm, directly linked to his nervous system. This experiment could lead to progress in the army (mind-controlled, armors...) or for disabled peaople with a missing limb.
But where are we heading ?
To answer at this question, I'm going to talk about the text "O Brave new world". It's a classic science fiction novel published in 1932. It depicts a dystopian society based on cloning with? a class system. Indeed, every babies are mass produced -like were Ford cars- and they have a life already predetermined.
So should we fear progress?
In the "I, robot" movie, the robots get out of control and rebel against human beings. Moreover in the USA, there had a lot of crash with the new Tesla car which they were uncontrolled.
To conclude, we can see that robots are more and more precise and strong so they could help us in industry or in surgery for example.
However, they could rebel against us. Therefore, for me, progress is a good thing but robotics can't be essential, our life can't depend of wire and bold bag.
Moreover, we could wonder(se demander) what will happen if robots take control of the Earth.
