Today, my presentation is going to deal with myths and heroes. First, I would like to define this notion. A hero can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his or her achievements, a superhero or maybe a role model or an icon. A myth is a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some hero or event. So we may wonder ̶t̶o̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶e̶x̶t̶e̶n̶t̶??? why are myths and heroes so important in our society? To answer this question, we are first going to see Bobby Sands’ action and, secondly, we will look the Mandela’s autobiography.
The first document entitled "30 years on, Bobby Sands stature has only grown” is an article from the Website "The Guardian” dated from the May 5th 2011. This article talks about Bobby sand’s jail life and his fierce struggle against the British Government.
First of all, Bobby Sands is an activist who fought for the republican cause. In 1977, Bobby Sands was arrested for the second time for the possession of a hand-gun. In 1981, Bobby Sands and nine of his comrades started a hunger strike in order to be given back their special category status instead of being considered as common-law prisoners. Indeed, M. Thatcher who were prime minister aimed to make them treated as criminal against the State. They could no longer stand seeing the younger prisoners being bullied and hit by the warden. Yet, M. Thatcher refused to yield on the grounds that they had no political legitimacy; they had not been elected by the Irish people. Besides, she didn’t want to negotiate with them insofar as they were criminals. Consequently, B. Sands and the nine other prisoners died. Far from fading, B. sands’ action and stature has kept increasing and has turned him into a heroic figure.
The second document, titled “Long walk to freedom” is an extract from Mandela’s autobiography. This text was written after his election as the 1st Black president in South Africa. First of all, Mandela was released from jail in 1990. He was the leader of the AFRICAN (pas FN mdrrr) National Congress. On May 2nd 1994, Mandela is elected President of South Africa.
The extract is composed of a speech and memories. The matters of N. Mandela is the people, he is at people’s service. He delivers a very positive message to the people. For N.M. the essential is the unity between the people and the president. Finally, he drew his inspiration from Martin Luther King. These two quotes tend to show that N. Mandela is ordinary, with his weaknesses, he said that he makes mistakes which he confesses. He is not a perfect, ideal hero. He has tried his best to be as perfect as possible. Yet, Nelson Mandela is assimilated as myths as the first black president.
To conclude, Bobby Sands made heroic action to obtain prisoners rights. More(je crois pas...), N. Mandela represented as a myth since he was the first black president. We can also relate these documents to the notion the idea of progress because of civilization improvement.
