The California Gold Rush began on January 24, 1848. This is a historic event. It was provoked by James Marshall because he had found a gold nugget involuntarily. The news spread very quickly, and many people came to collect gold. There were more than 300,000 adventurers, both Americans and foreigners but very few found gold. These people made a fortune but the others went home empty-handed with even less money than what they had at the beginning because for most of them, the journey was long and expensive. In 1852, California's population doubled. So the city quickly changed and many buildings were built.
