The International Phonetic Alphabet (API) is an alphabet used for the phonetic transcription of spoken language sounds. Unlike many other transcription methods that are limited to language families, the API is intended to cover all languages of the world. Developed by French and British phoneticians under the auspices of the International Phonetic Association, it was published for the first time in 1888. Its latest revision dates from 2005, which includes 107 letters, 52 diacritic marks and 4 prosody characters. .
