GAELIC ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
The Gaelic Athletic Association or GAA (in Irish: Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, in English Gaelic Athletic Association) is an Irish cultural organization whose main purpose is to promote Gaelic culture.
This promotion is made in two main areas: Gaelic sports (hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and Rounders) and Irish culture (language, music and dance).
It is the main and most popular association in Ireland with almost 800,000 members (about 5 million Irish).
The GAA is headquartered at the famous Croke Park Stadium in Dublin.
FOUNDATION OF GRAA
The founders of the organization are Michael Davitt and Michael Cusack, the latter born in 1847 in Clare County. After many years at Blackrock College in Dublin, and following the establishment of his own school, which was intended to prepare young Irish people for the entry contest into the British administration, Cusak addresses the issue of traditional Irish sports that were losing speed.3 With John Wyse Power, John K. Braken and Pj O Bryan he founded on November 1, 1884 in Thurles in Tipperary County the Gaelic Athletic Association. Its initial goal is to restore the Tailteann Games a kind of Olympic games played in ancient Ireland.
