1) Portuguese were the first Europeans to have visited Mauritius at the beginning of the sixteenth century.
2) Dutch settled in the island in 1598 and named it "Mauritius" after the Prince Maurice Of Nassau. The Dutch even introduced Sugar cane and Java deer in Mauritius
3) About 5 years later the French occupied the island renaming it "Ile de France"
4) It was under the French governor Mahé de Labourdonnais that Mauritius knew its first developement. A harbour was built.
5) In 1810, British conquered the island then a few years later in 1835 the British abolished slavery.
6) Hence, there was rapid developement on the island. Free Primary education were provided to the population.
7) Finally, Mauritius achieved its independence on 12 March, 1968. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam became its first prime minister.
