The Kingdom of Scotland emerged as an independent country in the Early Middle Ages and continued to exist until 1707.then in 1603, James VI, King of Scots, became King of England and King of Ireland, thus forming a personal union of the three kingdoms.
"Scotland" comes from Scotti, the Latin name for the Gaels; Scotia initially referred to Ireland. From the ninth century, the meaning of Scotia shifted to designate Gaelic Scotland and by the eleventh century the name was being used to refer to the core territory of the Kingdom of Alba in what is now east-central Scotland.
It's capital is Edinburgh. The climate of Scotland is temperate and oceanic, and tends to be very changeable. The population of Scotland in the 2011 census was 5,295,400, the highest ever recorded Although Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, the largest city is Glasgow, which has just over 584,000 inhabitants.
